It’s hard to find a well-made pen these days. You get plastic pens with fancy messages at every event or at every store as a present.
For me a pen is essential, I really like old school hand writing instead of using a MacBook all the time. At the university I use the rotring Rapid Pro and different lead pencils.
The Rapid Pro is made by rotring.
Rotring is a german manufacturer of ballpoint pens, mechanical pencils and other office utensils.
Rotring was founded in 1928 and was inspired by the Bauhaus design school.
Every product they design has a red ring – it is the trademark of rotring.
GOT A PEN?
What makes a good pen? For me it is about the feeling in hand, especially the used materials, the weight and the size. There is nothing worse than a pen that is too big or bulky.
A PEN FOR EVERYBODY
The Rapid Pro comes in a slim and easy triangular paper package. Very unobtrusive in a positive way. The pen is 14,8 x 1 x 1 cm – just a bit bigger than a normal pencil. The entire body is powder coated, which feels very good.
The pen has a full metal body that makes the body stable and offers a subtle clean look. The body has a hexagonal barrel shape. The curves of the corners are pretty smooth and offer a nice feeling in hand.
Every time someone else is using my pen they wonder how heavy the Rapid Pro is. The pen weights 2.9 ounces, neither to heavy nor to light, for me it is perfect. You can also balance the pen on your fingertip right in the middle – really nice craftsmanship.
The grip zone is separated from the barrel by the red ring. The grip zone is a matter of taste. I prefer knurled grip to rubber grip because of the stability. Some people say that knurled grips are too hard in hand but I can’t confirm. The Rapid Pro feels very good even after a long time of writing.
THE RED RING
The red ring is the trademark of rotring. Every product has one of these red rings. The red color is a wonderful contrast to the black body and definitely an eye catcher. The red ring is the only part of the pen that is not made of metal.
Normally the clip of a pen is the first thing that gets broken. The clip of the Rapid Pro is made of the same metal as the whole pen. I’m sure that this one won’t break by accident.
The clip also has a decent stamped in logo on the top – I love those details.
THE PUSH BUTTON
The push button is a big disappointment. As you can see on the picture the button does not perfectly fit in the barrel. It is just poorly made and I think that there is no excuse for this. It harms the overall impression of the almost perfect Rapid Pro.
BALL PEN REFILL
I prefer blue ink color to black. The Rapid Pro comes with a blue refillable metal jumbo refill which is very good and and allows fluent writing. The point type is medium which is actually almost standard. I bought a thinner one for daily writing.
This pen is related to his price one of the best choices you can make.
I love the weight and the powder coated metal. In addition to the wonderful look of the pen the Rapid Pro provides perfect usability and becomes a daily companion.
All photos were taken by myself with the Canon 1000D with a Canon EF-S 18-55 lens.
I made this honest review for my own purpose, rotring hasn’t paid or booked me for this.
